Protein and gene structures of SAP and XIAP. The human SAP protein is 128 amino acids in length and comprised of a single SH2 domain and a short carboxyl‐terminal tail. SAP is encoded by the SH2D1A gene, which has four coding exons and is located at Xq25. Human XIAP is a protein of 497 amino acids that contains three Baculovirus IAP Repeat (BIR) domains that participate in interactions of XIAP with caspases and a C‐terminal ring domain having potential E3 ubiquitin ligase activity. This protein is encoded by the XIAP (previously BIRC4) gene, also at Xq25.
