Classification

International Classification of Corneal Dystrophies (IC3D) (2015):

Sub-classified by the anatomic location affected
  • Epithelial/subepithelial CD:
    • Epithelial basement membrane corneal dystrophy (EBMCD), aka map-finger-dot dystrophy, Cogan microcystic dystrophy, and anterior basement membrane dystrophy
    • Meesmann corneal dystrophy (MECD) or juvenile epithelial corneal dystrophy
  • Epithelial-stromal or Bowman’s CD:
    • Reis-Bückler’s corneal dystrophy (RBCD)
    • Thiel-Behnke corneal dystrophy (honeycomb dystrophy)
  • Stromal CD:
    • Macular corneal dystrophy (MCD)
    • Granular corneal dystrophy (GCD)
    • Lattice corneal dystrophy (LCD)
  • Endothelial CD:
    • Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD)
    • Posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy (PPCD)
    • Congenital hereditary endothelial dystrophy (CHED)
    • X-linked endothelial corneal dystrophy (XECD)
