Parotitis

Inflammation of parotid gland.


Aetiology

  • Dehydration

Infectious parotitis:

  • Acute bacterial parotitis
    • M/C S. aureus, S. pyogenes and E. coli
  • Extrapulmonary tuberculosis
  • Acute viral parotitis (mumps)
  • HIV parotitis

Autoimmune parotitis:

  • Sjögren’s syndrome
  • Lymphoepithelial lesion of Godwin
  • Blockage

Iatrogenic causes:

  • Chronic nonspecific parotitis
  • Recurrent parotitis of childhood

Other associated conditions:

  • Sialadenosis (sialosis)
  • Sarcoidosis
  • IgG4-related sialadenitis
  • Pneumoparotitis
  • Associated with Bulimia

Diagnosis

Investigations

  • ↑ Serum and urinary amylase

Differentialal diagnosis

  • Masseteric hypertrophy
    • Can present as facial swelling in the parotid gland area and may be confused with ‘true’ parotid gland swelling
