Urine volume in excess of 3l/day.


Aetiology

  • OSMOTIC DIURESIS:
    • Poorly controlled Diabetic mellitus
    • Diuretic use
    • Iatrogenic:
      • Mannitol use
      • Urea load from Total parenteral nutrition (TPN)
      • IV fluids
  • WATER DIURESIS
    • Psychogenic polydipsia
      • Excess water intake
    • Diabetes insipidus:
      • Cranial diabetes insipidus
        • Pituitary mass
        • Surgical complications
      • Nephrogenic diabetic insipidus
        • Lithium, diuretics, interstitial nephritis, hypokalemia, hypercalcaemia

Diagnosis

  • Water deprivation test (in controlled setting)
  • Urea
  • Creatinine & electrolytes
  • Glucose
  • Calcium
  • Albumin
  • 24-hour urine collection:
    • Severity of polyuria
    • Presence of nocturnal polyuria
