Trichiasis

Trichiasis

Inward misdirection of cilia with the normal position of the lid margin.


Pseudotrichiasis: Trichiasis + abnormal position of lid margin


Etiology

Cicatrising trachoma, ulcerative blepharitis, healed membranous conjunctivitis, hordeolum externum, mechanical injuries, burns, operative scar on lid margin


Clinical Features

Symptoms

  • Foreign body sensation
  • Photophobia
  • Irritation, pain, lacrimation

Signs

  • Misdirected cilia
  • Reflex blepharospasm and photophobia on corneal abrasion
  • Congested conjunctiva
  • Signs of causative disease viz. trachoma, blepharitis, etc may be present

Complications

Recurrent corneal abrasions, superficial corneal opacities, corneal vascularisation, non-healing corneal ulcer


Treatment

  1. Epilation
    • Temporary measure
    • Recurrence within 3-4 weeks
  2. Electrolysis
  3. Cryoepilation
    • Double freeze-thaw technique
  4. Surgical Correction
